Shepards Pie With Beef Steak
Monday, 23 November 2009 20:45

Shepards pie is an old English recipe, basically it consists of a beef (diced or mince) and vegetable stew with mashed potato as the covering...

In a full kitchen I would make this in an oven tray then after putting the mashed potato on top I would put slices of tomatoe and then slices of cheese on top, pop the whole tray into the oven and bake the top until crispy and hte cheese has melted.

Seeing as I don't have a real kitchen, then we'll just do it this way

Ingredients:

Pepper
Tomatoe Puree
Vegemite/Marmite Or Seasoning (or Soy) Sauce
BBQ Sauce
Gravy Powder
600 Grams of Diced (or minced) Beef (1.3 lbs)
10 large cloves of Garlic
Fresh Paprika or Peppers
Cauliflower
Onion
Cabbage
Pumpkin
Potato
Carrot
Turnip type vegetable
Snake Beans
(use whatever vegetables you have available)
Instant Oats (optional)
Black Rye Bread

Preparation:

Turn on fry pan and 1/2 fill with water.

Dice beef into small cubes, cutting across the meat grain.

Cut and crush garlic, cut vegetables (except pumpkin, carrot and potato) and add to the pan of simmering water. Boil until the meat is cooked. Add Vegemite/Marmite or Strong Soy Sauce and pepper and then let simmer for about 30-40(or more) minutes, stirring occassionally to stop ingredients in the bottom of the pan from sticking and burning.

While the meat and veges are cooking cut the pumpkin, carrot and potao into small chunks, leaving the skin on. Boil the pumpkin, carrot and potato in a pot or electric rice cooker until they are very soft. Pur off the excess water and mash the 3 vegetables together.

Once the meat and veges are thoroughally cooked add in the tomato paste and mix in.

Slowly add boiling water to the gravy powder, stirring vigorously. Add water until the gravy is thick but not getting thicker then add it to the pan - stir the gravy through quickly to stop large clumps of gravy sticking together.

Add a large dash of BBQ sauce and stir through the pan mixture.

Thicken the pan meat and vegie mixture with instant oats if required, by adding the oats, stirring through and then waiting for a few minutes for the oats to absorb the sauces and juices in the pan.

Carefully spread the mashed potatoe/pumpkin/carrots over the meat and vegie mix in the pan and let sit for another 10-15 minutes before serving with black rye bread.
